There was some trepidation as the group set off on seven Magic 25’s from the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club at Shelter Cove; the gun went off, the flags came down and our intrepid sailors set off on a race to Pak Ah for lunch.
Dion Houghton’s ‘R2B2’ and Sam Chan’s ‘it’s my pleasure’ were slow to get to the line but proved it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. Jens-Eric Olsen’s ‘Red Herring’ took an early lead, but was chased by Steve Bourne’s ‘Merlin’, Howard Winn’s ‘Good Vibrations’, Darren Catterall’s ‘Carter’ and Eliot Cargile’s ‘Gnarwhal’.
Race 1 saw ‘Merlin’ cross the line first, with ‘Red Herring’ and ‘R2B2’ close behind followed by ‘Gnarwhal’; ‘Good Vibrations’, ‘it’s my pleasure’ and ‘Carter’. With Stella acting as support as the cruising option and X-Terminator as Race Control.
After a 9 course lunch at Pak Ah, Race 2 began with all boats vying for position on the line and R2B2 getting an early lead with the sun going down as the boats sailed home. There was a close finish with ‘Merlin’ managing to hold onto their second win of the day, followed by ‘R2B2’, ‘Red Herring’, ‘Good Vibrations’, ‘Gharwhal’, ‘it’s my pleasure’ and ‘Carter’, although everyone was a winner!!
Prizes courtesy of KPMG were awarded to all skippers for their support and great hospitality. The crew of ‘Carter’ won the first prize for keeping an eye on the fleet from behind while the Race Committee went ahead ready for the finish. ‘Merlin’ won the overall racing, with ‘Red Herring’ and ‘R2B2’ taking joint second place.

Everyone relaxed for the dock party well into the night.
Thanks goes to everyone that made this such a memorable day; to the Sportsboats Association and Dion Houghton who organised the boats; to Andrew Baird of YouCom for his co-ordination of the group and for crewing on Stella; for Bob Vart, his yacht X-Terminator and for helping with race control; to KPMG for prizes; and for everyone for coming along and making it such a great day!
